Deputy Head of Project Development (m/f/d)

Your Tasks

Objectives
Reporting directly to the Head of the Department ("HOD"), in addition to performing much of the objectives and tasks of a Senior Project Development Manager (detailed further on), the objective of this role is to assist in the various management activities allowing the HOD to spend more time in strategic initiatives. 
 
The Deputy is also expected to develop the skills to be able to cover for the HOD for periods of time. The key objectives of the Department include but are not limited to;
  • Ensuring JUWI ZA's portfolio of own renewable energy projects are highly competitive and sought after in the various markets within which the Company participates.
  • Converting the pipeline of opportunities into realised sales against agreed targets for RX4P and CPPA business models
  • Endeavouring to ensure that JUWI ZA's Project Development Department ("Department") are sufficiently resourced to meet the needs of the identified strategic markets, enjoy a suitable level of job satisfaction and are well-respected for their professional capability and integrity.
 
Primary Responsibilities
In summary, in addition to those of a Senior Project Development Manager, the role is responsible for the following:
  • Assist the HOD with the further refinement and effective rollout the organisation's Strategy, ensuring it is strategically well-placed to meet the needs of the identified markets in the short, medium and long term.
  • Assist the HOD with the management of the Department in a manner that facilitates an optimized project, business and commercial development environment.
  • Assist the HOD with the management of the Department such that, within reasonable expectation considering internal and external dynamics, delivers on the Company's Business Plan.
  • Assist various members of the Department with, and at times lead, contract negotiations for various Project Development and EPC Sales opportunities.
  • "Assistance" here will usually flow from meetings in which tasks will be discussed and shared but may also require delegated activities as appropriate.
Assisting the HOD with the following primary tasks:
  • Consolidation of PD and BD activities and skills
  • Further development, refinement and management of the Department's Strategies.
  • Further development and management of the reporting necessary for internal and external purposes.
  • Working with our partners to identify new business models and channels to open the private sector uptake of renewables projects, be it via direct PPAs, wheeling arrangements, or direct capital investment types of deals with related financing arrangements.
  • Oversight of the structuring of transactions while interfacing closely with the specific project team members.
  • Coordinating all aspects of the deal execution process, including negotiations and finalization of all project and financing agreements.
  • Managing the development and maintenance of the various financial models necessary for the PDEPC business models.
  • Supporting the optimization of any bid scorecard, as required.
  • Wind and Solar Project Development; Oversight of the optimisation and acquisition tasks necessary to maintain a highly competitive project portfolio. Assume the oversight role towards our clients with respect to the sale of projects. Position the company as far as possible as the lead developer in bilateral (embedded generation) deals with an emphasis on negotiating and contracting, to the extent possible, PPAs and related project agreements.
  • Develop an understanding of the competitive position of thermal and storage technologies and models and strategies to compete or collaborate as appropriate.
  • Actively finding and developing mechanisms to improve Team effectiveness.
 
Other
  • Willingness to travel to relevant project sites and JUWI headquarters will be required in line with business requirements.
  • In addition to the duties mentioned above, the job holder is required to carry out other duties that are in essence part of his/her area of activity, according to his/her knowledge and abilities.

Your Profile

Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Engineering, Business or Natural Science
  • Strong commercial mindset with a solid knowledge of Project and Corporate Finance concepts
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize competing time demands.
  • At least 5 years of work experience in the South African Renewable Energy Project Development sector
  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills with a proven track record in the closure of Project Sales Agreements
  • Experience in managing large interdisciplinary technical teams.
  • Strong understanding of the renewable energy industry, its drivers, KPIs and decision processes
  • Strong existing network in the South African renewable energy sector
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Fluency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat
 
Desirable Attributes
  • Financial modelling experience
  • Experience in Energy Policy and Industry Associations
  • Understanding of utility regulatory environment
